Evenings on the Roof

With the onset of spring, and our recent beautiful weather, we have been able to enjoy one of our favorite aspects of the house: Dinners on our ecoroof. We have a small area of pavers sitting amongst ferns, strawberries and camas with a little round table and a lovely view of the neighborhood, downtown, and the sunset. Just about the best way possible to enjoy a warm spring evening.

Energy From the Sun

This time of year our upper ecoroof starts looking a little scrappy. It gets a lot of sun and is generally too hot and dry for anything growing up there to be very happy. Recently we did a little maintenance work on our entry ecoroof with a few additional plantings. Read the rest of this entry »

Portland Tribune

The Portland Tribune that came out this last Thursday has an article about residential ecoroofs and pretty prominently features our house. The article is about the benefits of ecoroofs and why it makes sense to put soil and plants on your roof, and why it is a financially good idea for the city to give out grants to get people to build ecoroofs. Sedums and Trim

We went up to our upper ecoroof for the first time in two months over the weekend. This roof is entirely sedums in an attempt to make it as low maintenance as possible and they were planted by throwing piles of cuttings around and then waiting to let them root. So now coming back up two months later, we’ve found everything thriving and surprisingly red. Read the rest of this entry »
