Last Tuesday, Matt and I attended the open house for the new Community Center that Portland Parks & Recreation is proposing on the grounds of the vacant Washington High School. Although I became aware of the project only a few months ago, it has been in the works for 18 years. The committee presenting the process expects final designs to be submitted to the city in October. The timing of this conversation is especially serendipitous, as I – along with thousands of others – will soon converge at the vacant high school, which is serving as a hub for this year’s PICA’s 10 day tba festival.
Our Third Construction Draw
Over the last month we’ve accumulated a bunch of things that need to be paid for. Most of the major work done so far will be included in this (our third) draw on our construction loan… The foundations are in it, as well as excavation, survey and water proofing. Also in this draw are the final payment for our SIPs and our deposit for windows. After we submitted this draw request, our bank came back to us saying that they would not fund the entire requested amount for the windows and SIPs. Today was a busy day of getting things done. Our plumber showed up today to rough in sewer and water for the house, this actually all happened really quickly in just an afternoon. In addition to that, foundation drains went in. Read the rest of this entry »
Yesterday we had a little bit of progress on site, our contractor came in and wrapped our foundation with bituthene waterproof membrane and did some preparation work for the plumber who will come out on Monday and requested that gravel be put in ahead of his work. So we now have a crushed rock bed for our slab when that comes in.
Its been an exciting few days to catch up on. On Friday very early concrete was poured.

Yesterday our surveyor made it out to locate the house on our lot. It was a slow week in general, which was probably good that a lull in the schedule coincided with a week of excessive heat. But on Friday our surveyor staked out the corners of the house so that on Monday when the excavator comes in, he’ll know where to dig, and when the foundation guys come on Wednesday, they’ll be set as well.
