At long last we finally have our library ladder for loft access. A year and a half ago, back when we wrapped up construction and moved in there were some things that didn’t quite get wrapped up that we are still slowly ticking off (up next: proper curtains). Since we moved in, we have been using a folding aluminum ladder to get in and out of bed. Which has worked fine, but wasn’t very awesome and took up too much space. So the library ladder was a priority that we had to save up a little in order to install. And then earlier in the summer, we were getting lunch at a restaurant/charcuterie in our neighborhood, and they had a rolling ladder for their wine racks… We took down the name of the company that made it, and shortly thereafter placed our order.
Incidentally, this is the first product in our house to not use low VOC finishes and a week later the off-gassing is still noticeable. Its easy to forget what a huge difference better finishes make when you don’t have much to compare them against, but the difference in finishes was strikingly obvious as soon as we brought this into the house. In retrospect, when purchasing, we should have just specified that we finish it ourselves. But it looks good and its great to use and this time of year we leave the windows open all the time anyways.
Despite the steepness, our cat figured out how to negotiate the ladder pretty quickly. We were a little worried, she has always done fine with out aluminum ladder, but this one is definitely a little more difficult for a small animal with furry feet. But she got the hang of it after only a couple of days.
