First signs of Fall

Aside from the lower sun and rain in the forecast, there hasn’t been a whole lot of change to indicate that fall is setting in… But there is something in the air, and our ecoroofs seem to know it before everything else. A big portion of the ecoroof off our bedroom is planted with licorice ferns (in amongst the coastal strawberry), which are summer deciduous. A great quality for ecoroof plants to have because they lose their fronds in June and July to go dormant during the hot dry summer months which can be extra severe on plants growing in only five inches of soil.

So now, probably a full month before our trees show real fall color, our licorice ferns are sprouting back for a really wonderful seasonal change.
