News came in today that Harpoon House has been awarded LEED Platinum. Its been a long, long process and its good to be done. Our house went counter to many of the assumptions that LEED for homes takes (heating load too small for mini-split heat pumps, no landscape irrigation), but through a few appeals we were able to proceed. Its exciting that despite the setbacks, and without currently having any power generation, smart design was able win us a Platinum rating.

Second Blower Door Test

This morning we had our second blower door test done… Its not normal to have to get a second test done, but our house doesn’t fit very neatly into the LEED so after being granted a series of appeals, we are getting new performance tests. Read the rest of this entry »

Our Heating System

As we mention on our house signage, we have no furnace… But we still do have a little bit of heating need, and have been considering a couple of ideas of how to meet that need. Its looking like the system we’re going to use are a couple of simple in-wall Cadet heaters. This was the original plan which we abandoned for a while in favor of a mini split heat pump system, and now that we’re needing to actually specify a system in order to get electrical in place for it we are going back to the Cadet heaters. Busy Day


Today was a busy day of getting things done.  Our plumber showed up today to rough in sewer and water for the house, this actually all happened really quickly in just an afternoon.  In addition to that, foundation drains went in.   Read the rest of this entry »

LEED and Updates

Yesterday we had a little bit of progress on site, our contractor came in and wrapped our foundation with bituthene waterproof membrane and did some preparation work for the plumber who will come out on Monday and requested that gravel be put in ahead of his work.  So we now have a crushed rock bed for our slab when that comes in.
